Words that stick: Your urge to talk is wasting your team's potential

I used to think offering solutions was leadership.

Someone comes to you overwhelmed, stuck, or frustrated — you drop a quick insight, fix the problem, move on.

It feels efficient and helpful, but I found out most of the time it's not.

If I had to label it, it feels more like control disguised as care.

I’m naturally wired to go fast and solve things.

It makes me useful in chaos, but dangerous in conversations that need space.

I’ve interrupted insights that were about to land. Or redirected emotion into action before people were ready.

I’ve also hijacked discussions because silence made me uncomfortable.

If your first instinct is to speak, lead, direct, or “add value” — you’re actually doing the same.

It's because your ego can't handle the "not doing anything".

When someone on your team opens up, they’re not giving you a problem to solve.

They’re actually giving you a window of opportunity. A moment where you need to prove if you’re safe to speak to again.

Talk too soon, and they learn to shrink around you.

This is mental shift you should go for:
Leadership isn’t about being right faster.

It’s really about creating rooms where others can think clearly without your voice filling the space.

Next time you're in this situation: shut up long enough for someone else to surprise you.

Try to say the least in the moments that matter most.
